'... host[ing] the Siemens Science Experience Program... will inspire and enhance the learning of young Territorians, encouraging them to pursue a career within an identified skill shortage area,' said Dr Diane Pearson

Charles Darwin University’s School of Science and Primary Industries is proud to announce the inaugural Siemens Science Experience Program to be held in the Northern Territory.

The program which is aimed at year 9 students will be held at CDU’s Casuarina Campus from 19 to 21 June 2007.

Head of school Science and Primary Industries, Professor Chris Austin said the University is committed to providing Territory students the same opportunities as their fellow interstate student.

‘It is important for us, as a community university to research, identify and respond to the needs of our schools. Our aim is to ensure that all students across the Territory are provided with the opportunity to learn about the exciting world of discovery available through careers in science,’ he said.

‘The Siemens Science Experience Program is specifically designed to provide year 9 students with a positive insight into a variety of science activities and “hands on” learning experiences.’

Dr Diane Pearson, the school’s community and access champion and a local director of the event, commented on the role the program will play in addressing the Territory’s skills shortages.

‘We are all extremely excited to host the Siemens Science Experience Program and are hoping that by designing a program that is stimulating and relevant it will inspire and enhance the learning of young Territorians, encouraging them to pursue a career within an identified skill shortage area.

‘Participants will also have the opportunity to meet with lecturers to discuss and gather information on a variety of careers and study pathways available to them at CDU within the science, technology and engineering fields,’ she further added.

Secondary school liaison officer, Trisha Kohlweg, said that almost all universities with a science, technology or engineering faculty deliver the program.

‘Its popularity with students is that great, faculties have had to limit participation numbers. With the interest already expressed by schools across the Territory, I believe our program will be no different.’
