Bonjour le Français at CDU

Charles Darwin University is advancing the development of language learning in the Territory by supporting French language and culture classes this year.

In 2007, the University will support the running of evening French classes at Casuarina Campus by providing classrooms.

'We are pleased to offer the opportunity for the Alliance to base their teaching in a university environment', said Scott Snyder, Executive Director Corporate Services at CDU.

'French fits well among our other Higher Education language courses - Indonesian and Modern Greek - and it integrates within the University’s 'world view' goal.

The Alliance Française de Darwin is affiliated to the world-wide organisation, Alliance Française, which is dedicated to the propagation of French language and culture.

Classes for Semester 1 will start on February 20 and include three levels.

'We are very pleased that Charles Darwin University is sponsoring our classes this year, and we hope that this association will be maintained for years to come', said Ms Lea Mussak, President of the Alliance Française de Darwin.

The first level of classes will be: 'French for travellers and business trips' - an overview of basic daily French to make your trip more enjoyable.

'With the Rugby Word Cup being staged in France in September this year, we expect a few more people interested in joining this beginner’s course!' Ms Mussak said.

'The Intermediate level will also run this semester, but because of varying levels of knowledge, students will be asked to undergo a friendly evaluation test to get enrolled into this level.

'We also have a regular, very competent Advanced class which has been going on for years in Darwin, Ms Mussak said, 'and we are proud to say being in Darwin is no impediment to learning and practicing a foreign language, just the opposite.'

People who have a strong understanding of French verbal and written language and culture and want to maintain their standard are encouraged to enrol in this class. The Alliance also runs French conversations in a popular Fannie Bay café on Sundays.
