Australia may be in the grip of drought, but a drought of a different kind has been broken at Charles Darwin University’s Alice Springs library with Steven Greatorex, the first male employee in the library in almost 20 years, commencing work earlier this month as library technician.

CDU recruitment consultant, Alice Springs and long term employee Cath Taylor confirms the last male appointment at the library was an audio visual technician in 1987.

‘That was a long time ago, but we are excited to have Steven on board,’ she said.

Steven says he has fulfilled a dream to live in central Australia and moved from the central coast of New South Wales.

‘I’ve always been interested in the geological aspects of the red centre and I am fascinated by Indigenous work, including those by Albert Namatjira,’ he said. ‘The landscape and pioneering history and characters here are other drawcards.’

A career change in 2004 saw Steven move from information technology into his current work via a Diploma in Information Services from TAFE New South Wales in Newcastle.

Steven is looking forward to working with the library team and meeting members of the Alice Springs community.

‘I’m very happy to be here,’ he said.
