Charles Darwin University (CDU) graduate, Phoebe Ward, always wanted to work in Indigenous health and CDU’s Bachelor of Nursing degree has made her dream a reality.

The 24-year-old nursing graduate now finds herself working as a remote area nurse at Urapuntja Clinic in Utopia, Central Australia.

Phoebe said it was the flexible delivery of nursing at CDU which ultimately impacted her decision to study at the University.

‘I wanted to study, but I didn’t want to settle in one place. As an external student I was able to work and travel whilst studying.

‘The Bachelor of Nursing exposed me to the Northern Territory and gave me the skills relevant to working in Indigenous health,’ she explained.

When asked about the best aspect of studying nursing at CDU, Phoebe pointed to the experience of completing her degree whilst living in an East Arnhem Land community.

Despite feeling that she has now found her niche, Phoebe does want to return to Darwin to study midwifery through CDU at Royal Darwin Hospital.

Phoebe’s advice for prospective nursing students is simple.

‘Go for it. Nursing is a great job and Darwin is a beautiful place to study and live.’
