Charles Darwin University’s Community and Access team has welcomed the former Alice Springs Campus Leader Lyle Mellors to the new position of Senior Advisor, School to VET programs.

Drawing on more than 20 years of experience and skills within the Northern Territory’s Vocational Education and Training sector, Mr Mellors will oversee all of the University’s school to VET activities.

Mr Mellors commenced as a VET lecturer, and has since filled a number of middle management positions including head of department, senior lecturer, Advanced Skills lecturer and assistant head of division.

He was responsible for implementing Competency Based Training into NT Retail Meat Apprenticeship Training in the early 1990’s and represented the NT on the National Transition project to resource the National Training Packages in Meat Processing.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor for Community and Access, Don Zoellner said Mr Mellors’ extensive knowledge of the Australian Vocational and Training system and leadership experience was a great asset to CDU.

“In his previous position as the Alice Springs Campus Leader, Mr Mellors successfully guided the transition from Centralian College and the Northern Territory University in Alice Springs to the CDU campus which is a strong part of the community today,” he said.

The increase in activity involving VET in Schools, School Based New Apprenticeships and Pre-vocational Training is a key growth area for training through CDU and is in line with the NT Department of Employment, Education and Training’s School to Work Strategic Plan.

A major part of the senior advisor position involves developing the University’s partnership with the Northern Territory’s peak employer groups to open and operate the new Australian Technical College.
