Tennant Creek report

Staff at Charles Darwin University’s (CDU) Tennant Creek Centre have been busy over the last month.

A farewell for remote field officer Andrew Gaff was held at the Language Centre on 17 November. It included the presentation, by Andrew, of Statements of Attainment to 15 students completing Certificate I in Engineering and one student completing Certificate II in Engineering.

Andrew made a great contribution to organising and delivering a range of programs in Tennant Creek and the Barkly Region over the last two years. He will take up a position Power and Water in customer service.

Tennant Creek High School students completing the Certificate II in Music through the University have launched their debut CD. It was extremely well received locally and is now being promoted to local media outlets.

The high school also presented awards to outstanding students on 29 November. Kate Young, CDU lecturer in business, presented the CDU VET student award to Larisa Tarahija for her achievements in Certificate II in Business.

Kate also acknowledged nine other students who have completed certificates via CDU, including the Certificate I in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations); Certificate II in Business; Certificate I in Information Technology; and Certificate II in Music.

Kate also attended a function to start a Shared Responsibility Agreement between the Language Centre and Tennant Creek Town Council. CDU have agreed to deliver training for this program.

A number of CDU staff recently visited the Centre. Head of VTE Aaron Devine, Director of Remote Co-ordination Paul Fitzsimons and regional PR and communications officer Jason McIntosh stopped by in early November and met with Karan Hayward of the Language Centre, Tennant Creek High School’s Andy Mison, and Malcolm McAskill of the Juno Horse Centre.

Academic Indigenous support officer David Reilly and senior VTE advisor Lyle Mellors paid a visit to Tennant Creek and Elliot in late-November to assist in the VET in Schools program.

Alan Harrison will be visiting mid-December to meet with horticulture trainees and undertake drink driver and learners permit training.
