Phil Thearle hands over the keys to Jason Pokela

Charles Darwin University’s (CDU) Katherine Campus is experiencing one its busiest times of the year with students and lecturers working hard to complete studies, and those about to complete courses considering their options, including what to study next.

The Campus provided an information session at Tindal RAAF community in August. Those who attended were able to find out about courses offered through the University, as well as enrolment information.

Palmerston Campus’ Nyree Terry and Georgie Walton assisted with the presentation; Sharyn-Lee Lauder from the Defence Community Organisation was on hand to organise the logistical aspects and advertising.

A Careers Expo was held in Katherine on 21 August, promoting courses relevant to the career aspirations of those who attended. Prior to the Expo, short presentations were delivered to Katherine High School year nine through to 12 students outlining how CDU can flexibly meet their needs, with a commitment to credit standings as students progress, ensuring that everyone can achieve their chosen career, no matter where they start.

Phil Thearle, Campus operations manager, retired on 8 September. Phil has been with CDU throughout its early stages (and reincarnations) for more than 20 years. He began with the University as a lecturer, and then applied for the operations manager positions as they became available.

Incoming operations manager, Jason Pokela, has managed his own business and comes with excellent qualifications and references. We welcome Jason to CDU Katherine.

Other arrivals and departures at Katherine Campus include Cheryl Govan who joined the administrative team to assist with processing and supporting the enrolment process, students and lecturers, and final student outcomes.

Melodie Murphy recently left the Town Centre Office to move to Darwin. Melodie ran the Language Learning and Numeracy Program. The program completed the contract in July and Melodie continued to deliver training to students until they completed their individual programs. Melodie will continue within the same program in Darwin.
