Commissioner Willy Telavi

Former Northern Territory University (now Charles Darwin University) graduate, Commissioner Willy Telavi, has taken his qualifications to places and positions far beyond even his own expectations.

Having successfully completed a Diploma in Legal Studies from the University of the South Pacific in 1999, Commissioner Telavi then undertook his master’s degree in international management at the Northern Territory University in early 2000.

After a long and distinguished career with the Tuvalu Police Force, Commissioner Telavi now finds himself as the head of the Police, Immigration, Prison and Fire Service of the Government of Tuvalu and is responsible to the prime minister for the efficient functioning of those services.

Appointed to his current position in May 1993 he has served more than sixteen years in various positions with the Tuvalu Police Force and is now the second longest serving police commissioner in the South Pacific.

Commissioner Telavi said that his time and experiences at the former NTU provided him with a solid foundation to further his career.

“The appointment as police commissioner was the culmination of many years of dedicated hard work and determination, of which my time at NTU has contributed to,” he said.

“It was great to be a part of such a multicultural campus where I was able to gain support from other students. I will never forget the knowledge and guidance of my lecturers and tutors.”

Tuvalu is an independent constitutional monarchy in the southwest Pacific Ocean with a population of 11,636 and is the fourth smallest country in the world in terms of land area.
